Becoming involved in RuneScape, and by institution, RuneFest, has been an eerily identical encounter. When I began posting on social media about visiting RuneFest and becoming involved in the game, the number of friends and acquaintances who have come out of the woodwork who either have been playing the game since they had been a teenager or used to play with are still intimately familiar with the entire scene was… completely dumbfounding. In fact, my mind remains ignored by how popular a seventeen year old game still is that I have only ever heard about several times over the years temporarily mentioned in talks surrounding Ultima Online, my absolute favorite game of all time.

RuneScape was released in January of 2001 all the way back as a browser match. Taking a look at the timeline of my life, this could have put me closing in at the end of my senior year of high school, and splitting my time between being mad over the many changes Origin had made to Ultima Online since its launch in 1997, enjoying what could have been the summit of EverQuest, endlessly obsessing over the impending release of Dark Age of Camelot, also using all those psychological bandwidth I might have had left to concentrate on graduating. This is especially bothersome to me, as like my local club, RuneScape is a game which pushes all my buttons I just just truly found recently.

Presently, Jagex asserts two versions of this game. RuneScape, also known as RS3 is the next release of this sport. Like the previous releases, RS3 was also a browser game, but about a year after they published a full-blown downloadable customer. RuneScape at its core plays a lot like many other MMO’s, which produces a lot of sense as Jagex was responsible for creating a lot of the things that have since become the”normal” attributes and foundations of modern MMORPGs. You create a character, and decide your fate in the game. You can concentrate on crafting abilities and play with the in-game economy as your primary motorist, you can focus on combat and work your way through an borderline incredible amount of quests, and anything else that you feel like doing interior the open world.

The crazy thing about RuneScape quests is that it’s hard to think of many other MMO’s that delve deeper in the degree of depth that RuneScape does in its own pursuit system. It’s felt like contemporary MMORPG’s have really, actually simplified what they expect players to perform to complete quests. While games such as World of Warcraft may have a couple of in-depth quest lines, most of what you are doing is rapidly going somewhere, killing something, finding X quantity of items, bringing them back, and repeating. Comparatively, in RuneScape, quests require hours and span enormous, dramatic plot lines.
